Our Collections Maintenance work is typically business-as-usual. However, when our library received funds to lease a long-awaited offsite storage facility and renovate our tower elevators for ADA compliance, we worked quickly to relocate physical collections that had been in place for decades. Now that we’ve moved over 750,000 items in our library we’d like to share project highlights! We will share information about the background, execution, and lessons learned from these physical collection projects, and outline what’s next.

Cataloging & Collaboration: Reimagining a Children's Collection

Randall Library at UNCW recently weeded and reclassified its juvenile book collection, moving Young Adult titles into the general collection and relocating the rebranded Children’s Collection to a prominent location on the first floor with new shelving, a family area, artwork by K-8 area students, and a lactation pod. We hope these efforts will positively impact readers of all ages, working parents, and new mothers. This successful project was a collaboration between Cataloging, Collection Development, Access Services, and Building Operations.

The COVID Shuffle: Making the Right Moves to Successful Job Hunting

Davidson Library's Relocation Project: The Winding Road from Dewey to Library of Congress

In anticipation of a long awaited building remodel, the Collection Strategies team at Davidson College Library is facing at least a 33% reduction in the physical collection. Simultaneously we are committed to retain more than 70,000 print volumes through our partnership with the Eastern Academic Scholars Trust (EAST). This presentation will provide an overview of the planning and management of the first major step towards rightsizing the collection. The project encompassed the conversion and relocation of EAST materials that were still in Dewey classification to our LC stacks. Key points include space and collection assessment, strategic workflow development, and lessons learned.

Legacy ETDs with Legacy Problems: Changing ETD Workflows to Improve Discoverability

Atkins Library recently completed a metadata remediation project that inserted FAST controlled vocabulary terms for subjects into legacy ETD records in Atkins’ repository through an automated process and normalized data in other elements, all with a view to improving discoverability and the user experience. The poster will describe the stages of the remediation process, the difficulties that were encountered in the course of the work, and the results and findings of the project. By describing our own experience with remediating ETD metadata, we hope to point out fruitful possible directions for ETD metadata remediation for other institutions.

Rearranging and Expanding "Collections": Sensory Space for Neurodiversity Support

ECU’s library just opened a Sensory Space that was created from converting a large group study room and rearranging "collections" of lesser used library furnishings. The Sensory Space supports neurodivergent students and anyone seeking to develop and engage their senses, improve focus, or de-stress. The room contains wobble stools, low seating, a bubble tube, tactile wall, adjustable lighting, shielding hospital curtains, and a variety of fidget items.

Working Towards Student Centered Digital Archival Preservation

In recent years, libraries have leveraged unique digital collections to add value to their organizations. The pandemic left NC A&T without a yearbook to document student life. Bluford Library seized an opportunity to work with students to lessen the impact of not having a yearbook, by allowing students to submit images of student life. The goals of this project are to enhance the library’s digital collections and to build an infrastructure for future collaborations between students and the library. The project is separated into three phases, identifying interested parties, developing submission plans, and creating pathways for continuous interaction with students.
