Job Summary:
The Youth Services Assistant is responsible for assisting the Youth Services Librarian with the daily operations of the Youth Services Department. This person assists the Youth Services Librarian in developing and implementing programs and events for children, teens and families. Work is performed under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian. Although the position is based at the Chatham Community Library, the successful candidate may be asked to work at other locations on an as-needed basis. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Essential Functions:
•Provides reference and information services to young students and parents, teachers and public patrons in person, by phone, through email, uses a broad range of sources including the Internet and the physical collection to meet patrons’ information needs; refers patrons to appropriate outside resources when necessary;
•Instructs patrons in the use of the library catalog, databases, and other library resources;
•Assists patrons in understanding library services, policies, and procedures;
•Assists patrons in the use of various equipment and technology, computers, mobile devices, printers, and copiers; troubleshoots when necessary;
•Contributes to planning, promoting and implementing youth services programming;
•Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of youth services programs;
•Assists in the maintenance of the juvenile and young adult collections, including shelving and shelf-reading materials;
•Assists with the evaluation of the juvenile and young adult collection and resources; recommends additions to and withdrawals from the collection;
•Assists in marketing the collection by creating and maintaining themed displays to highlight the library’s resources;
•Works closely with the Youth Services Librarian to plan and implement special projects to improve the library’s services and collections;
•Serves as backup in other departments as necessary, providing circulation and reader’s advisory services;
•Assists with opening and closing procedures and
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques;
•Strong technology skills, including experience with Microsoft Office applications, and Internet skills;
•Ability to quickly learn new technologies, methods, and procedures;
•General knowledge of library circulation functions;
•Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively;
•Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment;
•Ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing and
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and colleagues.

Education and Experience:
One year of undergraduate education and two years of job-related experience preferred; high school diploma or G.E.D. required.

Physical Requirements:
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking, hearing, handling, feeling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work involves possible exposure to dust; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid NC Driver’s License.
