Fontana Regional Library
Location (City, State):
Bryson City, NC
Description:

The Fontana Regional Library is looking for someone who can wear many hats! If you can switch hats often and keep smiling, you may be just the person to fill the position of Outreach Services Librarian. You’ll be the captain of the Reading Rover bookmobile crew, steering the Rover through rough and calm times. Wearing a railroad engineer hat, you’ll conduct workshops for parents and caregivers, and story times for preschoolers. With your artist’s beret, you can create marketing materials for the many services you and your crew provide. Don’t forget your cowboy hat to rope in funding to help support outreach services to local schools and special events.

Fontana is a regional public library system serving Jackson, Macon and Swain counties with six member libraries and the Reading Rover bookmobile. Since 1999, Fontana Regional Library’s Reading Rover has developed pre-literacy skills by bringing monthly story time programs and age-appropriate library materials to toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers at area child care locations. The Reading Rover also sponsors caregiver and parent training workshops in techniques to encourage development of early literacy skills at home and in the classroom. Outreach to local schools includes working with administrators, teachers, and students to increase awareness and access to public library resources.

Qualifications: Masters’ degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution preferred. Alternative education requirements are a Bachelors’ degree in education or library science. A minimum of two years’ experience working in libraries, experience with children, and customer service are all required. At least one year supervisory experience required. Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, a thorough knowledge of current reading trends for youth, and familiarity with stages of childhood development. The ideal candidate should be able to work comfortably both as a team member and independently.

The Outreach Services Librarian position is 40 hours per week. Salary range is $32,000-$34,000 annually accompanied by a generous benefits package.

Duties: Supervise and direct outreach services staff, oversee daily bookmobile operations, work to assure effective communication within the community and in the regional library system to achieve local and system-wide goals. The Outreach Services Librarian develops and maintains the Reading Rover collection to ensure that it meets the needs of the populations it serves; plans and organizes outreach programs and activities; assesses user activities, programs, services, and goals; works closely with other community agencies for the growth and development of outreach services.
