K-12 Head Librarian

Charlotte Latin School is seeking a Head Librarian to begin August 2018. The Head Librarian oversees all aspects of the library’s programs, facilities, and staff. The incumbent ensures that the library’s academic and technology resources complement, enhance, and extend the school’s educational program. S/he collaborates closely with the division heads and other school leaders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Ensures that the library’s academic and instructional resources advance the school’s educational program.
Researches and evaluates new and emerging information technologies as they relate to a school library.
Participates in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of library professionals and volunteers.
Networks with local librarians, maintains active memberships in professional associations, and promotes the school in the wider community.
Acts as an advocate of the library, shares expertise at faculty meetings, serves on academic committees, and takes an active role in accreditation processes.
Coordinates curriculum of the K-12 library and ensures that the long-term transfer goals are met throughout the K-12 library curriculum.

In conjunction with the other librarians, develops policies and programming that will establish standards for and definitions of information literacy and bolsters support for library services that contribute to an information-literate student body.
Collaborates with academic departments/discipline-specific coordinators on specific needs and growth opportunities.
Maintains an attractive, dynamic, current, and well-stocked library conducive to reading, studying, and instruction.
Stays up to date in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to the library program and the school as a whole.
Works with Parents’ Council Liaisons and selected Vendor to plan the annual all school book fair from a programming standpoint and compiles a collaborative master inventory list using Google suite
Collection Development: In collaboration with other library staff

Selects, processes, and makes readily available a variety of resources, including print, digital, and multimedia.
Develops, acquires, and maintains a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students, the instructional strategies of the school’s faculty, and the school's mission.
Manages collection, development and management of books, databases, periodicals, e-books and other resources


Drafts an annual budget for the library and manages the budget throughout the year. Works with the Business Office to ensure the account is balanced.
Reconciles monthly credit card statements generated by the library.
Manages the Master Library Schedule.
Supervise work hours through Paycom
Oversees the maintenance of the circulation system that ensures the prompt return of materials and their ready availability to other borrowers.
Leads well and models excellent librarianship to staff

Additional Duties

Manages Educational Subscription budget for entire School and works with each division to revise as necessary.
Manages Middle/Upper School Volunteers and assists in planning a luncheon to honor volunteers.
In coordination with the technology department, purchases/updates library computers and/or equipment.
Keep and catalog a selection of materials as the acting archivist
Acts as Building Supervisor to manage all building needs (repairs, aquarium, custodial duties, safety drills, etc.)
Complies with school policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises library staff members
Conducts annual review of Librarians and support staff in alignment with CLS faculty performance review procedures.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in education, Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Studies preferred
A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a school librarian, 5+ years of experience in library program management a plus
Or combination of equivalent experience, education, and training.


Demonstrated success collaborating with faculty in all disciplines to enable/enhance student learning
Demonstrated experience in a supervisory role preferred
